EXCITEMENT MOUNTS AS RACE WEEKEND NEARS FOR FIRST-EVER MOLSON INDY MONTREAL
Montreal, August 2, 2002 With just over three weeks to go before the inaugural Molson Indy Montreal, organizers of the third and final Canadian event on the FedEx CART Championship schedule are in the final stages of preparation for race weekend, August 23-25.
"Everything is coming together extremely well," said Jean-Paul Blais, the president and chief operating officer of Molson Indy Montreal, an open-wheeled event that will see such drivers as series leader Cristiano da Matta and the Canadian trio of Patrick Carpentier Alex Tagliani and Paul Tracy racing their Champ cars on Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve on Île Notre-Dame. "With the second Molson Indy of the season being completed in Vancouver last weekend, attention is now focused on Montreal. Interest is really starting to gather as we get closer to race weekend, and I have no doubt that with the CART race and the support events during the weekend, it will be a tremendous show."
Mr. Blais announced today that the support events include the next-to-last race of the season in the CART Toyota Atlantic Championship, the final round of the Barber Dodge Pro Series and a race in the Fran-Am North American 2000 series.
Mr. Blais also announced that Molson Indy Montreal has recently reached an agreement with three major sponsors. Joining Molson, the title sponsor of the event, are the Casino of Montréal, the Dodge division of Daimler Chrysler Canada and Canon Canada, a highly respected market leader in business and consumer imaging equipment and information systems.
The Casino of Montreal is a world-class tourist attraction, located inside the racetrack on Ile Notre-Dame. "We are always striving to increase the numbers of tourists visiting," underlined Mr. Gaétan Frigon, Chairman of the Board, President and CEO of Loto-Québec, "and this event is a perfect means to do that given the many CART racing fans in the United States, particularly in the New England area. The presentation of the Molson Indy Montreal will provide the Casino with excellent visibility, both in Quebec and abroad, and it is certain to contribute to the vitality of the city's economy and tourism industry. So I invite all racing enthusiasts to come on out and share the excitement and suspense."
Dodge, which supplies the Dodge Viper pace car, is a staunch supporter of motor racing. "It is truly a pleasure for us to be involved in the Molson Indy Montreal," says John MacDonald, national Dodge brand manager. "We have enjoyed a great relationship with Molson Indy and have participated in both Molson Indy races in Toronto and Vancouver for many years. We are now thrilled to support the inaugural Molson Indy in Montreal and proud to be able to help bring the excitement of CART racing to Montrealers. Our dealers and our entire Dodge family are looking forward to a wonderful event at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve."
"Sponsorship is the lifeblood of a major international event such as Molson Indy Montreal and we are delighted by the corporate support that we have received," remarked Mr. Blais. "Such productive partnerships enable us to bring a premier sporting event such as CART racing to Montreal, providing fans with an opportunity to experience the thrill of watching it in person."
Carpentier, of Team Player's, who was in attendance at today's news briefing, expects that Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, the only racing venue to play host to a CART series and Formula 1 race in the same season, will produce plenty of excitement on Molson Indy Montreal weekend.
"Unlike a lot of permanent road courses in the CART series, Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is laid out in such a way that you could have quite a bit of passing during the race," said Carpentier, who won the Grand Prix of Cleveland on July 14 for his second career triumph in the CART series. "I'm very familiar with the track because I raced on it during my career in the Atlantic series. Even then, I was hoping that I would be able to do it some day as a driver in the CART series and that day is finally at hand. I'm sure the fans are going to be pleased with the product because the CART series is probably the most competitive in all of motor-sports."
Ticket sales for the first-ever Molson Indy Montreal have been brisk over the last several weeks, but Mr. Blais said there are still good seats available. "The Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve is an ideal racing venue from a fans' standpoint because regardless of where you're sitting, you always have a great view of the action and a tremendous sense of the ambiance. Plus what makes the CART series unique is that race fans have an opportunity to see and feel the action in the paddock and get a real sense of what motor racing is all about", added Mr. Blais.
